Potestas is a Latin word meaning power or faculty. It is an important concept in Roman Law.

The most important Roman magistrates (such as consuls and praetors) are said to have imperium, which is the ultimate form of potestas, and refers indeed to military power. -Wikipedia

As the Roman Empire declined and its law became defunct, the meaning seems to have changed considerable and it now depends on whose definition/ context and meaning you read.

For Potestas Management these words sum up what we see as the core characteristics:

power, ability, mastery, authority, possibility, opportunity

The word was chosen for this business as its name because many of the characteristics, we feel, relate to the activities of changing a business and making sure initiatives come fruition and are actually delivered. It is our experience that the forces against making a business transition can soon overwhelm or dilute the benefits the change it was intended to deliver.

This keeping on track and keeping up the momentum often results in the need to use some sort of authority to drive decisions and actions to make it happen, rather than let it happen. The initiative is also aimed at the good of the business as a whole, the winners are all the management and staff.

We chose the symbol of the stylised Roman soldier for two reasons. He is both a defender and an attacker. We defend the business as it exists to make it as robust as can against negative forces, like losing market share, poor processes, unclear structure, poor governance, while at the same time attacking with new initiatives to grow the business.

Our services initially look at the business model so that there is a common understanding of how the business works but more importantly what is the key to its success.  We back this up by carrying out a functional assessment to see the existing strengths and weaknesses. This is the defensive part of our services.

Only when we have a good grasp of the existing business can we start looking at new options and planning strategically for the future. The existing business has to pay for the future initiatives so before we attack this we need to be able to make sure we can defend our position as well.

The Roman warrior helmet serves as a symbol of these two characteristics.
